Silk or Skintex: Which Should You Choose?

Choose Silk for the classic look

  • Lightweight stretch polyester satin
  • Smooth, traditional sheen
  • Full-colour dye-sublimated printing
  • Jacket and cap: $229

Choose Skintex for more stretch

  • Stretch-performance polyester knit
  • Breathable and quick-drying
  • Sportier fit and finish
  • Jacket and cap: $250

Still unsure? Choose Silk if you prefer the familiar satin appearance of traditional racing colours. Choose Skintex if you want a stretchier, quick-drying performance garment.

Both fabrics can reproduce custom racing colours, patterns and approved artwork. For important colour matching, provide approved artwork, a Pantone reference, an existing garment or previous Mittys order details. Screen colours can vary, so speak with the team when an exact reference is important.

Race-Ready Silks or Costume Silks?

Searches for racing silks for sale often show costumes, vintage garments, memorabilia and second-hand silks alongside genuine racing products.

✓ Genuine custom racing silks

Made to match your approved colours, in a suitable racing fabric and the correct jacket-and-cap configuration.

Costume, used or vintage silks

Suitable for fancy dress, collecting or display—but they should not be assumed to match your approved design or be suitable for official racing.

For official use, buy custom jockey silks made to reproduce the colours approved for the owner or racing entity. A second-hand set may belong to another registration or may be the wrong size, fabric or condition.

Before You Order: Registration Comes First

Mittys manufactures racing colours, but the relevant racing authority decides whether a design can be registered and used in official racing.

1
Choose a design

Select your colours and pattern.

2
Check availability

Ask the correct racing authority about possible conflicts.

3
Register the colours

Complete the authority’s application and approval process.

4
Order from Mittys

Make sure the garment matches the approved design.

Registration is completed directly with the applicable authority. Mittys does not submit or approve registrations for customers. Read the Jockey Colours Registration Guide for the correct authority links. If you are developing a new design, see how to check whether racing colours are already registered.

Why Fluoro Jockey Silks Stand Out on Race Day (And When to Use Them)

Fluoro jockey silks in bright pink green orange and yellow leading a horse race for maximum visibility

Fluoro jockey silks offer an unmistakable way to bring colour, visibility and personality to race day. High-impact shades such as fluoro pink, green, orange and yellow can help owners, trainers and spectators identify racing colours more quickly in a fast-moving field.

When darker colours begin to blend into the pack—particularly in large fields, changing light or fast finishes—a well-planned fluoro base or accent can create stronger contrast without losing the identity of your registered design.

Mittys offers fluoro colour options across a wide range of custom racing products, helping you build a coordinated look that stands out on the track, in photographs and during presentations.

Why Fluoro Jockey Silks Stand Out on Race Day

Fluoro colours create strong visual contrast against many track environments and surrounding racing colours. That contrast can make it easier to follow a jockey’s position from the stands, identify a horse during broadcast footage or recognise your colours as the field approaches the finish.

They can be used as the main colour of a design or as a carefully placed accent on sleeves, hoops, stripes, panels or a cap. This gives you the flexibility to create a bold result while retaining the pattern and character of your racing identity.

When planning your gear through the Mittys Design Your Own range, consider where fluoro will create the greatest contrast with the other colours in your design.

When Should You Use Fluoro Racing Colours?

Fluoro racing colours are particularly useful when quick recognition is important. They can work well in large fields, at meetings held in changing light, under artificial lighting or whenever several competitors are wearing similar traditional colours.

They can also strengthen sponsor visibility and create a distinctive look in race photography, winner presentations and promotional content.

Fluoro options are not limited to jockey silks. Explore the Jockey & Race Colours, Harness Racing and Greyhound Racing collections, or contact Mittys to confirm the colour and product options available for your order.

Best Ways to Use Fluoro Colours in Your Design

  • Use fluoro as the primary colour: Create maximum visual impact across the main body of the garment.
  • Pair fluoro with a dark contrast: Navy, black and other deep tones can make a bright fluoro colour appear even more prominent.
  • Highlight moving areas: Fluoro sleeves, hoops, stripes or cap details can attract the eye as the jockey moves through the field.
  • Keep the pattern recognisable: Use fluoro to strengthen your established racing identity rather than overcomplicating it.
  • Coordinate related products: Repeat key colours across selected silks, caps, blinkers, rugs or accessories for a consistent presentation.

Check Your Racing Colour Registration Requirements

Racing colours and patterns are subject to registration rules, and the requirements can vary between racing codes and authorities. Before placing your order, check that your preferred fluoro colour and design combination is permitted and available for registration in your region.

If you are unsure where to begin, contact the Mittys team. We can help you understand the ordering process and prepare a design that aligns with the information supplied by your relevant racing authority.

Fluoro Jockey Silks FAQs

Are fluoro jockey silks allowed in official races?

Fluoro colours may be used when they comply with the rules and registration requirements of the relevant racing authority. Check that your preferred colour and pattern are permitted and available before finalising your order.

Do fluoro racing colours fade over time?

Like all bright colours, fluoro shades can be affected by repeated washing, wear and prolonged UV exposure. Follow the care instructions supplied with your garment, avoid bleach and allow the item to dry away from harsh direct sunlight to help maintain its appearance.

Can I combine fluoro colours with traditional racing designs?

Yes. Fluoro can be used as a primary colour or introduced through sleeves, hoops, stripes, panels and other accents. Pairing it with a darker colour is an effective way to create contrast while keeping the design recognisable.

Which Mittys products are available in fluoro colours?

Fluoro options are available across a range of Mittys racing products. Availability may vary by product, material and colour, so contact our team if you need confirmation for a particular garment or coordinated set.

Are fluoro colours easier to see than darker racing colours?

Fluoro colours often create stronger contrast against the track environment and surrounding competitors, which can make racing colours easier to identify at a glance. Visibility will still depend on lighting, distance, placement and the overall design.

Can I design my fluoro jockey silks online?

Yes. Explore the Design Your Own Products range to get started online, or contact the Mittys team if you would like help with your design or order.

Behind the Colours: Mittys & Evan Evans Celebrate a Historic Melbourne Cup

Hero image showcasing the 2025 Melbourne Cup winner’s flag for Half Yours. The design features a bold black lightning bolt on a light blue background, created by Mittys Racing Colours to celebrate the winning jockey’s silks.

🏆 Behind the Colours: Celebrating Jamie Melham and the Spirit of the Melbourne Cup 2025

As the sun set over Flemington this week, a historic moment unfolded — Jamie Melham became only the second female jockey ever to win the Melbourne Cup, guiding Half Yours to a stunning victory. It was a day that reminded Australia why this event remains more than a race — it’s a story of perseverance, community, and craft.

At Mittys and Evan Evans, we’re proud to have contributed to that story — from the beautifully crafted winner’s flag and presentation rug to the vibrant racing colours and sashes that celebrate the people and the passion behind the sport.

💙 A Celebration of Craft and Heritage

Each Melbourne Cup reminds us why this tradition continues to captivate — the artistry of the silks, the emotion of the finish line, and the craftsmanship that ties it all together.

Behind every stitch, print, and thread lies a team of makers, and we’re honoured to be part of that heritage. Our Racing Presentation Rugs, Custom Racing Colours, and Horse Leads are all made here in Melbourne — combining durability with artistry to bring each club and owner’s identity to life.

⚡ Inspired by the Winning Colours of Half Yours

This year’s winning flag featured a striking light-blue field with a bold black lightning bolt — a modern, symbolic design that captured the energy of the victory. Created by Mittys’ in-house design and sewing team, it was printed, stitched, and finished locally to the highest standards.

You can see our craftsmanship in every piece that graces Australia’s racecourses — whether it’s a Custom Jockey Silk or a Presentation Sash — because for us, racing isn’t just about the race; it’s about the moment.

🌿 Tradition, Innovation, and Respect for the Sport

There’s no denying that racing continues to evolve — adapting to modern audiences while honouring its deep traditions.
At Mittys and Evan Evans, we’re proud to play a small part in that evolution through the craftsmanship, innovation, and attention to detail that define our work.

Each flag, sash, and set of colours we produce is designed and made locally in Melbourne, built to last season after season.
Our focus is on quality, authenticity, and pride in workmanship — values that align with the respect so many hold for the sport, its people, and its long history in Australia.

🏇 A Shared Passion for Racing’s Bright Future

For over 100 years, Mittys has proudly dressed champions and celebrated Australian racing culture — from the Cox Plate to the Battle of the Bush, and now the 2025 Melbourne Cup.
Each season, we continue to support clubs, owners, and communities across the country with products that blend heritage craftsmanship and modern design.

We’d also like to congratulate our colleagues at Evan Evans for their part in this year’s Cup — producing stunning large-format flags and banners that dressed the course in colour and pride.

Together, we’re honoured to help tell Australia’s racing story — one stitch, one print, and one finish line at a time.

💫 Congratulations, Jamie Melham & the Half Yours Team

From all of us at Mittys and Evan Evans, congratulations to Jamie Melham, trainer Craig Williams, and the entire Half Yours team on this incredible achievement.
Your courage, focus, and history-making win have inspired a new generation of racing fans — especially women in sport — and reminded us all why the Melbourne Cup still matters.
