A Giant Flag Farewell: The Valley’s Final Cox Plate Before Redevelopment

The 2025 Cox Plate was always destined to be special. It marked the final running of the race at the current Moonee Valley track before major redevelopment works begin — a farewell to a venue rich with racing heritage and emotion.

To commemorate the occasion, Evan Evans and Mittys were invited to create a giant Australian flag to feature during the National Anthem. As the riders entered the track and the Anthem began, the 14-metre flag was carried on horseback up to the famous 2040-metre start — a stirring tribute that united pride, history and ceremony.

Crafted for a Once-in-a-Generation Moment

Printed locally in Melbourne on 135 gsm Trilobal fabric, the flag was produced in sections and joined seamlessly by our in-house sewing team. The lightweight Trilobal allowed the flag to flow gracefully in the breeze while maintaining its vivid colour and shape under stadium lighting.

Every seam, every alignment mark, and every reinforced edge was handled with care. The production team understood this wasn’t just another flag — it was part of The Valley’s history.

A Shared Sense of Pride

The project came together through genuine collaboration between MVRC’s events team, the performance riders, and the production crews at Evan Evans and Mittys. When the flag unfurled on the track — accompanied by Bruce McAvaney’s commentary on Seven’s live coverage — it captured everything that makes the Cox Plate so meaningful: tradition, passion, and community.

“The flag looked sensational,” said Charlotte Mills, Head of Racing at MVRC.
“It became one of our favourite moments of the day — watching it carried up the straight as the Anthem played.”

“We’re incredibly proud to have made this for MVRC — it truly filled my heart,” added René Watson, Sales Manager at Evan Evans.

Made in Melbourne — With Gratitude

For more than a century, Evan Evans has crafted flags that celebrate Australian stories. To see one of our creations feature in such a historic farewell at The Valley was an honour — and a moment our team will always remember.
